I spent the last two weeks travelling around Ireland, getting to see some the sights I lasted visited when I was in my teens. Always my favourites were the Cliffs of Moher and the Aliwee Caves. My wife had never seen either so I was really excited about showing her these great places of interest in Ireland.
So after the tour of the Ailwee Caves I was hoping to cap it all off with the wonderful views to be seen at the Cliffs of Moher. To say I was disappointed with the Cliffs of Moher is an understatement. Ok, they are in the middle of improving the path ways around the area so there was a lot of contruction work going on that prevented us from accesing the castle on top of the cliffs, but it was not only this that was a huge let down.
When I was there last, it was possible to go right to the edge of the cliffs to look straight down to the water crashing against the rocks. This is no longer possible at the main tourist area. You now have huge rock slates preventing access to the cliff edge and any attempts to climb over these slates will quickly be stopped by the numerous stewards around the whole cliff area.
Luckily I was still able to convince my wife that it really was an amazing site by walking the opposite direction of the castle, past a lovely big sign that warned you not to enter.
I’m sure all of this is in the interest of safety, but I feel this whole new look will ruin its appeal.
