A few months ago, I wrote about these new Starview boxes that allow you to get access to all NTL digitals channels, with a basic NTL analogue connection (illegally of course). I did my own research at that stage and found that they worked a dream.
Since then, I’ve been keeping my eye on developments on this front, hoping that I am proven right that NTL will actually find a way to prevent this. So far, everything NTL do to counteract this has been simply a waste of time. The speed at which the developers of the software for these boxes can find a way around the changes is phenomenal, which causes a minimal distruption to service. I’m sure it would be a nightmare for most users of the box to find out ways to get round these changes, but for the technical savvy, it’s a simple task.
Anyway, a friend of mine purchased one of the new Starview box’s, now called TheBox or Starview 2. This guy is as technical as an apple and instead of trying to figure it out himself, took the easy option of calling on me. So, I went and had a look at TheBox for him.
Although it’s more expensive than the original Starview, it’s not much different at all. Specifications are exactly the same, even though it’s advertised as being an upgrade. Looking closely at the system, the only change really is the EPG (Electronic Programming Guide). In the past, when you scrolled thorough the channels to see what was on next, it would also change the channel. Very frustrating and quite useless! Now though, you can scroll through the channels to see what’s on, without changing channel. Another new addition is the time beside the info for each channel and it also shows what’s on next.

Hi
Do these starview boxes work with just a virgin broadband connection or do you need the cable tv too ? I hear you can use a splitter with your broadband and they’ll work from that too. Im not sure if this is more troublesome though, have you any feedback on this …
Thanks

the box, or starview 2 is actually just a plain old starview box with a new box, no pun intended.
but to be honest, legel or not, starview boxes are not worth the money, it would be better to invest in a eurovox max 2008, digivox, or the cream of the crop the magnificent dreambox 600c.
there is a new box coming out to Europe by a company not mentioned above that is cheaper than a dreambox and is considered the greatest free cable access set top box around.
as for how ntl’s attempts have failed is to do with the encryption they use, a system called nagravision, it’s easily breakable using brute force ( not actual physical force, but cryptoheads wil know what i mean) and the onlt way for upc to stop there signals being compromised is to change encryption systems, but that is too expensive, it would require acquiring the rights to use a new system, plus replacing all the existing ntl boxes with a new one.
but which system?
Viaaccess? broken
Bliss? broken
Seca? broken
Irdeto? broken
Betacrypt? broken
Cryptoworks? you guessed it broken
only encryption system not been compromised is Videoguard, but ntl can’t use that, why? it’s owned by rupert murdoch, and used exclusively on sky digi boxes.
p.s. i don’t have ntl, i don’t even live in ireland.
#4 by Tom Doyle at July 24th, 2007
| Quote
Yep, it is as I said not different at all in terms of spec. It’s merely a “front cover” change, which is disappointing.
I love your input on the encryption side of things. I always imagined that it was simply a brute force hack that allowed them to crack the encryption and wondered what they could do to prevent this.
There was talk that NTL were putting in place a system that would only allow 3 attempts at the code and then you’d basically be blocked out. Did you hear of this? Do you think they can implement something along these lines?
#5 by jimbo at July 24th, 2007

well the cypher keys are worked out by brute for on for more powerful machines, the box in terms of computing power is pretty weak.
as for ntl doing a 3 strikes and your out approach, well that just shows how little they know about how these devices work.
ntl set top boxes have a talkback routine which allows for on demand features, ppv etc.
the boxes listed above can’t access these ppv on demand streams, because they don’t facilitate the talkback feature.
none of the above boxes except two can use brute force, but they don’t need to, the cypher algorithm is already compromised the boxes just have to run through a 128bit scan and the key is once again broken,
the keys you see listed on starview box sites similiar to 3a 44 ff 00 etc are usually obtained by users of other better equipment.
but if you have a starview, preferably a non cloned version, look around for the new firmware update and image, which when flashed to the box will allow the system to autoroll and obtain the new keys, usually which such a device no more than ten minutes but with better equipment it can be rolled in half a minute for a 200 channel scan.

not that i’m aware of, i don’t know what system magnet use. but the boxes work on virgin media in england which used to be telewest and ntl, and on upc in ireland which used to be ntl and chorus.

In regards to people saying the dreambox is better than the starview 2 i disagree, the first box i purchased was a dreambox 500c and as a warning to anyone else thinking of buying one if your cable signal is in the slightest bit weak the 500c just cant cope, the first time i used it i got a couple of months out of it but had to put up with constant freezing pictures then it crashed. The second time i reinstalled the software it couldnt even find the channels,i then hooked it up at my friends house and it worked.I then purchased the starview 2 as i heard they were much more stable and to this day i have had no problems with it plus it was cheaper than the dreambox!

As far as I know, there are numerous “manufacturers” of the Starview box, but I think the only one creating TheBox is Wizard Satellite – http://www.wizardsatellite.co.uk

well to be honest if you are not too knowledgeable with computers then yes the starview 2 is the simple choice, just plug and play. but the signal issue you had with the dreambox, i had too for about a day, a dvb signal booster and a better far more stable image called commando and i never had a problem with it since, and in aesthetics the epg on the dream box was a lot better than the tripe one on the starview too, it has to be one of the worst in the market, the terrible one for foxtel in Australia is better by comparison.
but if you want a box that beats all, look for the iT Gate TGM220c, been onsale here in oz for a few months and i thinks it’s the best box ever released, better than even the dm7020.
but the simple truth is, if you just want a simple plug and play box, then go not for the starview 2 (the box) but get the eurovox max 2008. at least you get a stable box, unlike the tosh that is the starview.

the starview, the box are originally made by the same company in south korea, the reason the box was released was a number of companies in china cloned it and sold a very inferior box as the starview. the box is just a starview with a new casing and hasn’t been cloned yet but it’s only a matter of time. the euroox was also cloned the model called the bluebox, named as it came in a blue cardboard box was cloned too, and some sellers would sell a cheap blue clone in a red box saying it was an original, hence the newer model 2008 blackbox.
for the iT Gate check out http://www.itgate.co.kr
that is the manufacturers site.
the law on these boxes is rather strange, no law against making them, no law against selling or buying them, but hooking them up to the cable network is when the law is broken.

#17 by jimbo at August 8th, 2007

actually bob, it is illegal to connect up to your service providers cable network with any set top box other than your cable company’s provided box.
the fines range fron 1,500 euro and/or 6 months in prison in the irish courts, or if it gets to a european court up to 20,000 euro and/or 2 years in prison.
just go to boards.ie and type in eurovox in the search box and you’ll see the excerpts from both law books.
plus if your network catch you, and you really have to be a moron for the network to catch you btw, they will blacklist you from ever receiving cable tv, and you’ll be blacklisted by other cable companies too.
if you know anyone in england involved in this area, ask them they’ll tell you the same.
virgin media are lately phoning up former customers trying to catch them out, and in some cases knocking on doors and being let in to customers houses.

cable broadband? you’ll have to borrow a box to try it out, but generally split the signal coming into your house before it gets to the modem.
then connect one feed to the cable box of your choice, and the other feed into your modem.

yes mainamin, the tgm220 can be used in any country, unlike the starview/the box or eurovox
it can be updated easily either through your pc, or by connecting the box to the net and it’ll download the required image in seconds.
a new site in england is dealing exclusively with the tgm, they are the only people seling and programming for it in western europe, a quick search through google with the criteria itgate tgm220 that exact phrase and it’ll be on the first page.

v450 for ‘the box’ (ireland )or
v451 for ‘the box’ ( UK) .
Putting anything other than v257(fix) on a clone will ‘kill’ the receiver.

I think the Eurovox 2008 is the best that you mentioned, based on reviews. The only one bad point is that it doesn’t support widescreen (16:9), so if you’ve just bought a widescreen tv, you want t o make the most of it!!

the starview 2 and eurovox only autoroll for a limited time, the firmware they use is a partial image, not a FULL decryption cypher which linux stb’s use.
the dreambox and itgate will always work no matter what the cable companies throw at them, unlike the starview and eurovox which have limited autorolling features.
if you really want a box worth your money, get the itgate. you will not regret it.

How you can justify calling this as having our full backing and support really startles me.
The price your changing daily must be a mystic number you have thought up in your head also,,, we can offer the PVR TGS110 for the same price you have the tgm220 on offer for at your site.
We are the only Distributor in the whole UK & Ireland for this and would like to point out to everyone that although he is correct in saying its the best cable box on the market, he is no way, yet anyway, a official trader of them, and he definitely doesnt have in stock.
And for whoever asked,, these cable boxes will work with any cable that uses Nagravision encryption and this generally covers indepandant cable providers as well as all VM and NTL, in both uk and Ireland.
If it doesnt work straight away you may need to insert current keys into it,( but if its a linux box it will continue to autoroll from there so no worries )

Why would anyone go to extremes to hack chorus/ntl?
simply by purchasing a technomate receiver and motorised dish you could get more movie channels(with newer movies than sky), live premiership football (saturday 3pm kick offs included), more kids channels and far better quality tv. this would require no more than a serial cable and the application of a patch via a computer to the receiver so simple to do that any technophobe could accomplish it!
this of course should not be done as it may be illegal.
also NDS(sky encryption) is hacked to some degree, it is possible to programme a cam such as a dragon/predator Cam with a patch which will allow subscription sky cards to open in a non sky box, this is being widely used with sky fta cards to open channel 4,five,five life, five US, sky 3 etc, as this does not involve any subscription!
Card sharing is also possible(though highly illegal) through a protocol called SSSP which can also be done through an average broadband connection and serial cable connection, this type of system can open just about anything in theory!
I would however not reccomend anybody break the law in any of these areas!!

Kieran are you connected to a live cable feed? you also have to download new firmware onto the box, read through the posts there is a link somewhere to the site.

I already have two chorus boxes for two tv’s in my house. If I was to get rid of both(Chorus) would I still receive the signal in order for the starview 2 to work or do I have to keep one chorus box in order to receive the signal? A response would be appreciated as I do not have a clue

Hi I am looking to invest in a tuner but dont know which is best between Starview 2, Eurovox max and the itgate. There are only 3 things that I am concerned about in the choice. 1. Which is the best for picture and sound? 2. Best for reliability? 3. If I have Chor*s in ireland which one will give me the most channels, more importantly Sky/Setanta sports? I have seen a friend of mines starview 2 briefly and they seem to have all chorus digital usual channels. Also thought the interface was pretty good after reading it ws not so good on other forums. Ok maybe 4 questions – 4. best interface? Help please….

when picking a box pick ur budget.
eurovox / starview much the same and well priced and available easily.
itgate – expensive, no reviews, hard to get (1 seller in uk and no stock/no sales site)
u pays ur money u take ur choice. i would get a eurovox but it dosnt do widescreen

can anyone advise if you can get HD content though these if you have a HD reciever?
and as its reciveing ntl briadcasts does that mean you cant get skyone through it due to sky taking it of them?

I know you can’t in Ireland. Even if you could, the Starview doesn’t output in HD, so it would be pointless.

most people i know have them over a year and have had no problems, you can put firmware on the box that updates itself when the codes are changed. The website i posted a few posts above gives a lot of information

Make sure that you have a real box first as there are a lot of clones/fakes about, that firmware will make the box useless if its a cloned box, real starviews have the scart socket on the left hand side if you are looking at the back of the box, some pics on the link below.

Sky encryption is (pretty much) unhacked – you can’t decrypt Sky satellite signals without paying Murdoch his moolah.
NTL/cable companies use different encryption which HAS been hacked – so you need a cable feed and then a Starview/other cable box.
Don’t do it though, ‘cos it’s illegal.
