A few months ago, I wrote about these new Starview boxes that allow you to get access to all NTL digitals channels, with a basic NTL analogue connection (illegally of course). I did my own research at that stage and found that they worked a dream.
Since then, I’ve been keeping my eye on developments on this front, hoping that I am proven right that NTL will actually find a way to prevent this. So far, everything NTL do to counteract this has been simply a waste of time. The speed at which the developers of the software for these boxes can find a way around the changes is phenomenal, which causes a minimal distruption to service. I’m sure it would be a nightmare for most users of the box to find out ways to get round these changes, but for the technical savvy, it’s a simple task.
Anyway, a friend of mine purchased one of the new Starview box’s, now called TheBox or Starview 2. This guy is as technical as an apple and instead of trying to figure it out himself, took the easy option of calling on me. So, I went and had a look at TheBox for him.
Although it’s more expensive than the original Starview, it’s not much different at all. Specifications are exactly the same, even though it’s advertised as being an upgrade. Looking closely at the system, the only change really is the EPG (Electronic Programming Guide). In the past, when you scrolled thorough the channels to see what was on next, it would also change the channel. Very frustrating and quite useless! Now though, you can scroll through the channels to see what’s on, without changing channel. Another new addition is the time beside the info for each channel and it also shows what’s on next.

Hi HAR
post by scouser
N** MMDS use a DVB-C variant so a standard DVB-C box is fine, e.g. The Box, Eurovox MaxV, or any other DVB-C box. Ch**us MMDS use a DVB-T variant hence why the TX or Box T, (or other T type equipment), is required as they have a T type tuner.
So for N** Cable and MMDS and Ch**us cable = Any DVB C box.
Ch**us MMDS = Any DVB T type box.

It could matter where you live as there might not be a digital signal in your area, if you read around enough forums you’ll see this is a common problem, kilkenny city, new ross etc. not looking for your exact name and address but general area as someone might know if you can receive a digital signal, personally i wouldn’t know bbut have experienced an area where they had basic cable tv but could not receive any digitalchannels through the box or box-T.
plenty more sites other than skywonder, shop around as always
jack i presume the essential pack is already digital?
if so than yes, but pointless paying for digital and getting a box aswell no?

hi Terry, updating you mean as in entering codes ?
you need to get yourself a DB9F to DB9F NULL MODEM CABLE, if you have a laptop you need to get also a USB TO DB9F SERIAL ADAPTOR,if you have a pc you should be ok as it probably has a serial port at the back of it.
download the firmware here

Satman says “Skywonder, No they dont, I think you need to do some learning, Not an argument I will even entertain, I know starview and Eurovox WONT deal with nagra2 without a new box being released, end of, no argument, will relish being proved wrong in March.”
Well, Satman, it seems March has come and gone…and we’re all still happily using our Eurovox and Starview boxes. Would I be right in thinking you are affiliated with Satkings and it would be in your best interests to shout from the rooftops about the doomery that is Nagra2? I reckon it shifts a few more Itgates off the shelves, eh?
Don’t get me wrong, Itgates are fine boxes, I’m even contemplating one myself – but the facts are that there are NO guarantees N2 will doorstep Starviews and the likes, just as there are none to say that the Itgates will run and run. I think you could be right, but let us wait and see….eh? Also, I think N2 will not be rolled out right across the board….I think they will have a fw tricks left on the N1 system. N2 will be skipped, on the whole, and the *real* next system could doorstep us all. I think we’re a long way off though.

@ Dellboy, If you want good info on what satellites you can pick up join this forum http://www.alsat.co.uk . i would buy a technomate 3000 series, they start from about £60- £80, they are dead easy to patch and open up many german/polish film and sport channels, if you ran this with a motorised dish you could also get bbc/itv on 28 degrees east
etc.
I have 3 technomates for years, they are great.
If you have a very, very big dish it is possible to pick up nilesat, this package covers EVERY premiership match live!also has movies etc, this is hacked at present!

Thanks Greenmachine What Im trying to achieve is to get a system which will allow us to pick up in Croatia Setanta Sports Ireland which broadcast GAA Football / Hurling games.
#33 by greenmachine at August 1st, 2008
| Quote
You are best getting a satellite subscription to setanta and the setanta box, if you want a simpler system to set up you could get a large dish with a twin lnb, one cable can go into the setanta box, the other into a FTA box for BBC/ITV etc, this would be simpler to set up as motorised systems need a bit of maintenence such as resetting sometimes after heavy winds.
the Alsat Forum is excellent and any questions will be answered. If you are looking to take satellite gear over with you there is a very good dealer in Derry that I have dealt with in the past, he is very reasonable, he has an ebay shop Murfs tv accessory store.
hope this helps

#37 by greenmachine at August 5th, 2008

Hi James,
it really is a question of how long is a piece of string!
I have a 1.1 mtr triax dish with a stab motor, I also have a technomate motor which is far faster moving and makes less noise!
It totally depends what you want to use it for and where you are in the country(for dish size).
If you are after sport, movies etc I would reccomend getting a 1.1mtr dish, technomate motor, 0.2db twin lnb, technomate 3500 d+ USB.
at the moment Premiere sports and movies are open(live premiership 3pm etc, movies, porn) as well as digi tv(discovery, live premiership, porn) and polsat (cartoon network, boomerang, disney channel), the thing is this can change very quickly, with encryption you never know!
at least if you go motorised you can subscribe to digitalb, on 16 degrees east if you lose all the channels, its about half the price of sky and has movies, kids and live premiership as well as HD(you would need to buy a technomate 6900 to get HD though)!
the most future proof(if there is such a thing) are the Linux based boxes with hard drives such as dreambox, eagle etc, with these and a good broadband connection there is a software programme called SSSP, it is highly illegal and of course I would not reccomend you break the law, but this system allows you to logon to a server when you go onto a pay channel, you are connected to the server along with many others, when the information is needed by the box to open the channel if there is someone on the network with a valid card it will take that information and open the channel (card sharing), of course if you live in the bog like me then broadband is only a distant dream!

tony press menu, then type 1570, then switch the emu to ON, exit back to the channel screen and they should be back on.
jilly, the upload button is for a cdf which is a channel dump file and its purpose is to store your channel order on your computer so if anything happens to your box ie. you might have to do a factory reset, all your channel frequencies and order have been saved for use later, personally ive never had to use this as a quick scan usually sorts me out.

This does not stand for ntl mmds they use dvb-c only chorus…

has, i’ve looked into frequencies, try a manual scan with 411.000 otherwise Try a factory reset and delete all channels then you need to set the start frequency to 100.00 and the end frequency to 900.00 then set the symbol rate 6887 or 6952 depending who you are with.
skipper pat, go to one of the channels you are missing and note the frequency it is on. then go to channel editor and delete all the channels you are not receiving. then go to manual scan and enter the frequncy you noted and this should restore your missing channels, purpose of deleting them first is that if you dont you will have two of the same channels, one working one not, you can do it afterward also but just easier to do it first.

sorry for your trouble has, what firmware do you have installed or have you flashed the eurovox before? no or bad signal litterally means no or bad signal so if you have your main feed split try putting the main feed alone into the rf. the firmware on this link for the max v has a signal booster option included in the tv settings menu, you could try that.
http://www.4shared.com/account/file/44834422/de5f6c04/UFL_MaxV_Kuro3_18_04_08.html
to do a manual scan with one frequency enter the same frequency in start and in stop and press ok.
thats good to know skipper well done
daryll im only familiar with eurovox and starview although the itgates do the job just the same as far as i know, starviews are a bit more user friendly i think anyway, as far as i know the urovox max v has ceased production but retailers may have some still in stock, evox pvr is taking over but its basically the same as the max v but with the option to add a hdisk to it to record, starview also has a pvr. up to you really, they all do the same, my advice, get the cheapest one you can lay your hands on, they all need to be flashed also as it is illegal for the supplier to do so. easily done yourself.

hi Has, sorry for the lateness of the reply, you say you’ve tried both 6887 and 6952, which symbol rate has picked up the TP’s for you?
Do you have a neighbours house you can try the box in as it could be a problem with your connection if it says no or bad signal, the main feed is the ariel coming from the box on your wall, if it is split, i.e. connected to your broadband also, disconnect it and plug the main feed into the connection marked RF on the back of the pvr only. its possible that its just a weak signal if the channels were appearing and disappearing and you may have to call the service provider about this, if scouser pops in for a read he might be able to direct you to a booster for the connection to strengthen your signal.

RRP should be around the £80 mark.

if i want to strenthen the signal for certain channels is their anything i can do on the eurovox pvr.
what is the difference between the eurovox pvr and the new 1 cuz they were released at about the same time.
why isnt the pvr good starview rules?

the 28/04 firmware has a built in signal booster option in the tv settings menu you could try that, the new evox ex1000 isn’t a pvr just a standard slimlined version of the max v
the only reason i dislike the evox pvr is because it only has one tuner whereas the starview pvr has two tuners, so as you are recording on the starview, you can watch any other channel but on the evox you can only watch another channel which is on the same frequency as the channel you are recording. still a good box though im sure, does what it is supposed to do!

more the merrier truepool, depends on what signal you have, do you have ntl mmds or chorus mmds or true ntl cable? what area are you in and is there an ariel on your roof or do you have the line coming from the ground?

Hi,
Having read through this post from start to finish, my inital impression was that the itbox is the best option out there (also the most expensive), but the more recent post suggest that this may not be the case. I don’t mind paying the extra for a better piece of kit, but was just wondering if the anyone out there knows if the itbox is better than the others.
Thanks

My opinion podiumdave, they all do the same thing, get the cheapest one you can lay your hands on, they may not last forever! Im sorry i cant give an in depth review of the itbox as ive never used one but, gets the channels as do others

Has, sorry forget my last post to you about signal booster firmware as this is for the max v and not the pvr, you could try a signal booster attatched between your box and the line from the wall.
truepool the eurovox ex5000 or ex 1000 or starview super should do the trick there.

dinny if its a new starview you’ll have to flash the box with firmware, if its already flashed press menu and type 1570 to enable the emu, you dont need to input codes manually once its flashed and you wont be given them here either!

OK I’ve kept a close eye on this for the duration its been running & we all know what boxes work on our cable systems and what possibly won’t when the inevitable happens this year, next year or whatever year….
The real issue here is what version of Nag there going to.. If its 2 we’ll have fix fairly quick, this could entail buying a new box for 200 quid or so, or a new patch could possibly work (which I doubt) on the current boxes that’s been widely used now for years.
If its Nag 3 – we’re in serious sh*t, why?? … Because hackers on satellite are having problems opening it up currently, Digital + Spain have switched from 2 to 3 about nearly a year ago or so & has not been breached – Polsat & Digi + are on there way to fully rolling out to 3.
There of course will be a hack on 3 in a couple of years because believe it or not Nagra will Want this to happen!!!
There has been reports of leaks online by the various Encryption Companies – because they want providers to buy there next version of there encryption!!!!
There is always a way but NDS will not have a public hack in our life-time – Privately maybe.
Do not worry about Nag 2, but are UP* silly enough to buy an encryption AGAIN that’s already widely hacked???
Lets hope so lol!!

as you can see from the link , and there are many others, it is being worked on for a long time now, as far back as 2006 i think, i think we should just stop worrying about this and cross that bridge when we come to it.
