The end of the High Definition Format war - Toshiba give up on HD DVD
Toshiba announced today that they will no longer develop, manufacture or market HD DVD players or recorders. Toshiba say they will continue to work with companies such as Microsoft who helped promote the format.
This should end the VHS versus BetaMax type war that has been ongoing between HD DVD and Sony’s BluRay High Definition Format for some years.

Hi Tom
I was just reading
http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/19/toshiba-sez-it-wouldnt-change-a-thing-still-thinks-hd-dvd-is-b/
Otherwise I’m a bit out of the loop. Was there much difference between the formats? Do you think BlueRay was better?
Hi Peter,
I wouldn’t have said either was a better format. Sony did appear to be having a few problems with Blu-Ray, but in terms of quality I don’t *think* there was much difference.
The death knell was really that major film directors were only going to produce films on the Blu-Ray format.
A bit like the betamax and vhs where the pron industry took preference to VHS.
Cheers Tom. At the end of the day it’s one less format to worry about for consumers so that’s a good thing :O)
