A few weeks ago I decided to purchase a DVD recorder, you know, one of the cool ones that allow you to pause live TV, allows you to record to an internal HDD aswell DVDRs etc.
After much searching of the shops I decided I’d go with a Philips DVDR3597H (scroll to bottom), which seemed to have everything I required. In the shops they were ranging from €250 to €290 a pop. When I went into one well known electronics store, they were displaying a 20% off sign, when I asked them could I buy one, they only had the display model left. I don’t know why, but they wouldn’t give me anymore off the ragged looking display model, so I didn’t buy it then and there.
A friend of mine who frequently uses eBay recommend an eBay store by a crowd who call themselves Luzern Tech. I went onto eBay to have a look at them and the product I wanted was on auction for only £10 GBP.
I thought “great! this is my lucky day”. Well how wrong was I…
I won the auction for £71 GBP. Delighted, I paid the £71 + £8.50 delivery charge. In total it worked out at around €102. Happy days!!
When I received the product about 10 days later, I set it up and had it all functioning perfectly. Now, the box that arrives with the product has a lovely page stating that all products are fully tested before leaving the warehouse – worringly they had a longer explaination on how to return your product.
Anyway, when I tried to use the most basic and fundemental part of a DVD player, my world collapsed around me. I inserted my favourite Pearl Harbour DVD (;)) and bang, the disc tray kept opening and closing. It simply wouldn’t play any DVD.
More disappointed at the fact that I’d have to untangle all the wires again to put it back in the box, I decided to email Luzern Tech to find out the process from the horses mouth. 2 days later I still hadn’t heard back from Luzern Tech. Looking at their negative comments on eBay, I shouldn’t have been surprised.
One of the negative feedbacks that stuck out to me most was one where a guy won an auction for a few pounds and when he didn’t receive the product questioned Luzern Tech as to why. They said they were out of stock, which is against eBay’s rules as far as I know!
Anyway, I kept faith and just thought I’d been a little unlucky since they did have a fairly high rating of 97% on eBay.
When I finally got a reply from Luzern Tech, I realised something was wrong. They sent me a RMA number and asked me to deliver it back to them. At no stage did anyone ask me what was wrong with the player.
So I went off packaged it up and delivered it back to Luzern Tech’s warehouse in Blanchardstown, Dublin. When I got there, I found an office block with a logo the very same to Luzern Tech’s except it was called Luzern Solutions.
When I rang the bell, another shocker came to me… The guy at the end of the intercom said “You have a delivery? Is it a return? You are in the wrong place if it is”. The first thing that struck me was “Is it a return”, obviously well used to people coming to the wrong door to drop off a broken product. The second thing was, “you are in the wrong place”. Granted the main entrance was only at the other side of the building, it just seemed very shady to me.
Anyway, I dropped it off and didn’t hear a word from them until I went chasing them again. A few days later, I got what looked like an automated response from them stating that I would be getting a refund.
Again, no-one asked me at all what was wrong with the player. It was as if they already knew it would be returned anyway and were just happy to give me my money back.
So today I got my refund, except I was only refunded for the price of the player and not for delivery. I guess the motto of this story, be very careful when dealing with this crowd. If you buy something, make sure it’s at a decent price or you’re likely to get a dud.
My belief is that I bought something for well below what it should have sold for, so in order to fulfil the order, the just sent me out a broken player knowing I would send it back and they could give me my refund.
Oh and this is all from a company that say they are reputable – take a look at their website – www.luzernsolutions.com
They even have the nerve to state:
“PROOF! …..
We know we’re good!! We have the highest feedback rating on eBay of any high-volume refurbished product reseller. We also maintain customer feedback ratings with the very same systems, staff, and procedures. “
That’s a blatant lie as many users of eBay will be aware of.
I’m now just fighting to get all my monies refunded, but do you think I’ve heard from them? You got it… no

Well I guess that’s my point. I have had issues and they were not willing to sort out the issues.
If the product I bought worked without any problems, I wouldn’t have had a problem with them and I probably would have recommened them to poeple.
But when you do have issues, you expect them to be resolved, you don’t expect them to treat you badly, which I feel they treated me.

Just returned my Archos as it would not charge, and they still say they have not had it delivered. It was sent on 30/07 and what a fool is was in trusting the Royal Mail and Luzern Solutions. Both have said we have no trace of the package. Has anyone else lost a package on its way to be repaired.

I agree with you fully, Luzern Tech on e-bay are a complete waste of time to deal with & you will loose money.
Even though I paid this shower in full immediately, I have been left waiting over 5 months now for a fully working LCD television or a full refund.
Through ebay, Luzern Tech will send you out faulty or damaged, store returned faulty products & they will over charge you delivery costs.
They will not refund you in full & they will charge you for this.
They will not send you your money back directly, but they will only Part refund you, after deductions, via Paypal, who then also take off a percentage off your money.
You will loose out. They are a closed back office operation for faultly shop returned products. Wise people often say, “You get what you pay for”. But with Luzern Tech on ebay , you don’t even get that.

Hi Tom,
I’ve bought quite a few things from Luzern and had problems in around 50% of cases. I carried on using them since if things go well, you can pick up something decent cheaply (or a few things and bundle them together) – I got a nice LCD TV a few weeks ago and it seems totally fine.
However, their customer service is almost totally non-existant. They rely heavily on the “ChannelAdvisor” automated system for checkout purchases etc, and even submit complaints to eBay automatically if you are a few days late paying (which often happens when you ask them questions and they NEVER respond).
In fact I was notified that I’d received a “strike” for nonpayment on eBay, weeks after I’d paid for the item – all because they opened two or three disputes automatically and I’d only responded to the first, assuming they would close the others for the same reason (i.e. I had paid). Ebay instantly fixed this though, acknowledging that Luzern were noncommunicative and that I’d paid long beforehand.
Regarding the DVD recorders, I also bought a couple of them for about the same price you did, and went through at least four of the devices, dropping them back by car to their Blanchardstown depot every time (which means they at least paid the delivery costs for the replacements to my house repeatedly, hah). They would crash very often, and I soon noticed little blips where audio would be lost for 2 or 3 seconds at variable intervals (but more than once every minute on average). The audio gaps would vanish if I burned a programme to DVD, but persisted when playing back from the device’s hard disk.
Not the best crowd, especially regarding communication, but I have experienced worse on eBay!

Hi Oisín,
Thanks for stopping by. Sounds like you’ve had a few hard times with them also!
Sometimes something like this can be worth the hassle because of the cheap prices. My biggest issue really is that they not only spread lies about the situation in their response to my feedback, but they really shouldn’t be running as a company – ebay should clamp down on these types of sellers.
I’ve had better dealings with dodgy sellers than this COMPANY!

Hi Tom,
I recently bought an mp3 player which didnt work from the start. I told Luzern about it and they asked me to send it back to them. When i replied if they will pay for the post they never answered. I sent since then 2 more emails regarding paying for the podt and never heard from them. I dont mind now paying for the post but im not sure if i will ever hear from them after sending the mp3 back. I live in london and bought it on ebay.
What do you suggest?
Many thanks!

Legally you are entitled to have the shipping paid for because the goods were faulty. I suggest you talk to the National Consumer Agency of Ireland. They already know about this shower after my whole situation.

I have bought many products from Luzerntech and I have to save in the main I’ve been delighted with the bargains I’ve gotten from there. I’ve recommended to friends who did have some issues, 1 with a Goodmans LCd and another with a DVD recorder from the same brand. I’ve since discovered that Goodmans is a terrible brand and everybody should steer clear. Both guys had to return at their own expense which wasn’t great but they got replacement products promptly. Put simply, if you want to get great deals then use Luzern Tech. However if your product is refurbished you’ll only have a 2 month warranty and you better make sure you’ve stress tested it in that time. Any fault in the product will show long before that time is up so its up to you to use some common sense when buying refurbs! I have done very well out of them and will continue to do so when I need electrical products

Hi Mickey
I too apparently got a bargain, however when things went wrong, they went completely wrong.
The lack of a response from LuzernTech, the fact that they felt that we should pay for a return of a dodgy product from them and in a nutshell their complete lack of respect for the customer.
When all that is said, it’s only a bargain if you get something that’s not dodgy and that’s you being lucky. When you buy something from say PowerCity, you know they won’t play you like LuzernTech do, so at the end of the day, it’s probably worth paying the extra few bob for that peace of mind.
Even if you only have 2 months warranty, it should not be a hassle to return the product and you certainly shouldn’t have to go to any expense.
After contacting the NCA they made it very clear that what this crowd were doing was wrong and the reality is that we shouldn’t let them away with it.
If you’re happy to continue getting a terrible service, so be it, but it will cost you in the long run.

@Tom and Sean.Hi, I have to agree with MickyG. I have also purchased multiple items from Luzerntech (3 X Large LCD’s, DVDR with HD, MP3, MP4). I have only ever had an issue with 1 product and was dealt with efficently and courteously. Actually as I was local enough to their premises I emailed them and asked them if there was any chance I could pick up the last Large LCD’s (to save on the shipping cost) and they kindly agreed so I got an even better bargin! I have recommended them to family and friends and one of my family did also have an issue with their MP4 Archos unit and in response to an email they sent they where given trouble shooting advise from Luzerntech and were told if it didn’t solve the issue to let them know and they would replace it. As regards to MickyG…it seems that anyone who claims to have had a good experience with them is going to be accused as a Luzern employee…well I assure you I am not..and I doubt that the 67000 positive feedbacks they have received are not either!! You obiviously have a bee in your bonnet …let it go…GET A LIFE…Eddie

@ Eddie
Firstly, they don’t have 67,000 positive feedbacks, that’s the number of items they have sold…
In the past month they’ve had 20 compliants from item never arriving to item having to be returned.
You are obviously one of the lucky ones and should keep your eye on the issues everyone else is having.
I find it hard to believe they let you pick up the TV as this is one thing that a lot of people have an issue with.
If you look at the comments above, you’ll also see that there has been other comments of positive experience and only one so far has been accussed of being a staff member, so stop making these assumptions. Read the article and comments if you want to put a point across.
I don’t think I need to reiterate my point. LuzernTech should be avoided at all costs in my opinion. Yes you may get lucky, but is it worth the risk… for me… no

Hi Tom,thanks for the very informative and i would have to say intelligent arguement, others should respond the same..
.My experience with Luzern is order a lcd it comes its good i`m happy….if everyone were to get just 1 item odds are you`ll be happy,if your unlucky to get a dodgey one well i`m sure you can live with it…
you`ll see it as a once off…through out the year `i` have bought for friends and family..too many to mention…thousands of euros worth..
I can say that I`ve returned about ten tv`s…large ones..think about that…if i bought 100 and returned 10 thats 10 %…thats a lot.. so I dont fall into the category of I bought 1 dodgey 1 I`ll get ovet it,,as mentioned before.
.In most cases I`ve had them returned and an exchange the same day this is acceptable..but shouldnt be the way it is..some wouldn`t even power up..I was given inside info that they would sometimes get one in and not test it and sent it straight out..
If i get a straight swap this is ok nothing else can be done….but lets say they say its not in stock?…you get a refund into paypal and then charged a percentage to get your own money back….remember your after losing 45 sterling for the delivery that aint coming back…So 10 tvs do the sums…its a huge loss..
Its a numbers game..because I`m a big buyer I can speak with authority on this…In fairness Tom they messed you around with the postage,,i send them the bill for the postage I dont ask them for it,,thats with the smaller items…juast recently they have refused to take back a big item that they claim is out of warrnty,,we are talking outside by a week or so…this will go all the way…its hit and miss…some great stuff some old scratchy stuff,,people online need to smart up..they are paying 10 sterling over in the auction than luzern are offering it in buy it now…crazy..
I know some one who has about 10 of the dvds they are all dodgey and outside the warranty,,he lost out on these and said of all the products the most trouble…hard drive s cant mess with those things..even notice the argos dont sell them or philips tvs any more very little anyway???
If you need to contact me Tom please do….
I had to search for this forum cause i neened to know who else was gettine jerked around

Agreed col, the DVD/hdd recorders are awful. It’s like they received a supply of entirely defective stock and sold them as ‘refurbished’.
Of the four or five of them I tried (two slightly different Phillips models), every single one of them had the same major problems, crashing, extremely frequent glitches in playback from hard disk (which disappear if you burn the recording to a DVD and watch that… design fault?) – 5/5 defective is a bad sign.
Equally bad was their complete lack of communication on the matter, failing to answer emails, trying to strike me for failed payment 2 weeks after I paid, etc. :/

hi oisin,i have 3 strikes ahainst me on e bay as unpaid items..they were all payed but if you dont keep answering the queries itll stay open, luzern say its automated nothing to do with them..I bought a lap top a good model knew it was a bargain. 300 euro..then got a message on e bay seller has cancelled auction i rang them and they said it was sold previously but the buyer was slow making payment so they had to give it to him…..i opened a case on e bay got me no where.if i`m a day late with payment they block me from everything….
they have good deals on 52″ tvs…but your talking 1000 euro good value if you get it but what if they turn round after 17 weeks sorry your not covered and it doesnt work????????good business sense would say look after the customer…I know some people say they have never had a problem if you buy 1 or 2 things this may be true but the truth is that a high percentage of the stock has a fault if you bought enough things youd experience this and you tell them what the fault is so they know what to fix theres a clever idea (on their part) ….items to be aware of..cameras scatched from being returned possibly under a long warranty…a couple of dvd players looked as if someone had ice skated across the top of it…

That’s true, a couple of the recorders were scratched here too, and they do have an abnormally high percentage of faulty items (I’ve returned two Palm Z22s, an E2 and those DVD recorders, which is about 25% of the items received).
However I should point out that eBay almost immediately deleted the “strike” for nonpayment when I opened an appeal, stating that: “In this case, I’ve checked your account and can see that you have already paid for this item. Therefore, I’m happy to inform you that I have removed the strike from your account *****. Please let me assure you that there will be no further negative effect from this strike on your account.”
In general, eBay have been quick and decent in these matters. You should always make an official appeal/complaint when these things happen, as soon as possible.

thanks oisin,i`ll try that…my latest experience with Luzern is because i`m pushing for cover on an item just outside the 90 days,,which I had a lot of problems with in the first place but didnt make a big deal out of,they said they will review this thats great thank you very much then in the second breath tell me i buy too much so they are going to limit or stop me buying from them this came from one of their managers,if that isn`t a threat I don`t know what is.I know people who buy 10 tvs at a time and are never questioned about how much they buy….in this case that person took it personal , its business and business isn`t always black and white…the minute he was challenged he got dirty…could give a good company a bad name very easily that person…is there legislation saying you cant be a good customer…?

You buy too _much_? I believe that’s what most companies call an ideal scenario!
Buying your products = income = success
Not buying = no income = failure.
The only reason I can think of that they would dislike people buying “too much” from them is that they would discover the relatively high rate of defective products being sold.
Either that or they skipped every lecture on basic business sense and how commerce works (people buying your products contribute income to you directly – that’s not hard is it?).
If you have this quote in an email, I suggest you contact the National Consumer Agency (www.consumerconnect.ie) and ask them what they think of “you buy too much” being a reason to curtail your rights as a customer.

Yeah ,Oisin I`d say it maybe more to do with the fact that I`m challenging them instead of lying down and taking it..I do rate a lot of their stuff but have found a lot of negatives too. They said they`d look at the product and on the other hand threaten to stop selling to me.I`m sure when they get the product back it will be refund into pay pal loose my percentage and possibly not a full refund if they feel its not as they want it..i`ll keep you up to speed…

I don’t think there is any doubt that the customer service at LuzernTech leaves a lot to be desired. How they treat customers is downright nasty. It was this, coupled with the fact that they are clearly selling defective goods as working, that made me write the original article.
If this was a high-street store they’d be closed. No-one is complaining enough to the NCA either as they told me they would keep a close eye on them and come down hard on them if they continued this illegal activity (refusing to refund postage when goods are defective).

Hi Tom
Here’s my story. I bought a refurbished full HD Philips TV from LuzernTech and after setting it up, I noticed a slightly bright patch on the screen about 6×9 inches in size. It was so faint you could only notice it between programs, when the screen was black. So I emailed to luzerntech outlining the problem. It worked perfectly otherwise, it was just slightly irritating.
As you mentioned before, they didn’t require any further details they just said they would send me a replacement and gave me an RMA number. Two days later a delivery guy arrived with the replacement. I had missed a call from him when he tried to deliver first time round so i called back, outside of work hours, and the delivery guy, who was at home, got back in his van at about 7.30pm and dropped it to me. What a legend. He boxed up the old one, took it away and left me with the 2nd refurbished set. It was under warranty so cost me nothing. I hooked it up and it was perfect. Have had it 6 months now and absolutely not a bother with it.
I would be of the opinion that the service from LuzernTech is second to none. Their response time and solution focused service was fantastic. Considering they’re dealing in a minefield of a market, with used/refurbished electronic goods, i think they’re doing a stellar job.
I paid half the price for the TV that I would have paid in the shop. So in conclusion I would definitely use them again.

Dan,
I bought an Archos MP3 player from them (not an MP4 player, it only has a monochrome screen for navigation) a year or so ago, and it seems fine. Only problem is that the battery life isn’t amazing – a few hours really, even if you leave it on pause. I think it uses a small hard disk (!) which keeps spinning, even when playback is paused. If your version uses flash memory, it should be much better in that regard.
In my experience, it was only certain categories of items that were rife with problems (the DVD/HDD video recorders); other items were (mostly) of decent quality. And, as Tom says, their after sales service is very bad. Selling you a broken item and only replacing it if you deliver the item to their warehouse in Blanchardstown is poor form.
The Archos is probably ok though, so you won’t have to deal with that end of things!

Purchased Philips 42″ LCD in December 2007 on ebay. First unit had speaker problem. Was replaced reasonably promptly. Second had poor picture quality. Was replaced after short delay. Third unit was perfect and continues to work well. There is no doubt they are a dodgy company. If you have the time and patience you may get a bargain. I never had a problem with their customer service. They continued to replace the units at their cost. I did get the impression that several replacements were normal practice. If you choose to buy from Luzern be prepared for several months of dissatisfaction. You have been warned.

Tom Doyle is absolutely correct about Luzerntech. “Steer Well clear” Their Website is totally misleading the Public into buying, what they claim are 100% fully functional refurbished products. A 100% fully functional refurbished product. Well what a blatant lie. Nothing could be further from the truth. They are in reality, a real life Del Boy operation. The products that they are selling are not tested at all. They are selling dodgey electrical goods. Some of them are probably Okay? They are selling second hand products that, initially were returned to the original shop, that they were purchased in. They were returned to the shops because they were faulty, and the buyer got a new replacement product under guarantee. How Luzerntech got their hands these is anyones guess. I done one deal with them to check out their claims. I purchased a Philips Blu-Ray Player from them on E-Bay. I received the Player. Switched it on. The first thing that I noticed was a few loud sounding noises that were coming from the Disc detector that moves back and forth when You load a Disc. I knew right away this thing was defective.
I loaded a Disc. It could not be detected. Would not play. I tried again and again to no avail. There was a fault with the Disc detector mechanism (with the red and blue lasers) It just kept making loud noises and would not move into the correct position to detect and Play a Disc. I sent it back right away. Sent an E-mail to the NCA about them. Don’t be fooled by these shower. Their claim, tested and 100% fully functional. What a load of Bollocks. I rang them and made sure I got a full refund for the player, and the delivery charges. So don’t waste your money with this rogue trader Luzerntech. Ignore their claims and do not deal with them.

Sometimes problems happens with things but from the looks of things its more the customer service that people are annoyed with. If they showed a bit more respect and common sense dealing with the problems it could sort out a lot of peoples ill will towards them.
