It’s only been 6 months or so since Google last updated their favicon, but they’ve decided to do it again.
Inspired by André Resende, the new favicon is the result of Google encouraging user submissions after their last favicon update.
Personally I think changing it after 6 months is a bad idea simply because it’s change too often. People like the familiarity aspect of a brand icon and this just doesn’t instill that. It looks like it could change again too pretty soon judging by their official blog.
Here’s an example of what it looks like in case you haven’t seen it yet:

Fearing the frequency of changing something is the most dogmatic and idiotic fear.
If you need to fix something, then just fix it as soon as possible. This is what google has done and I comment them.

At the level they are at, I wouldn’t expect them to have put something out “broken” in the first place.
From a branding perspective, it’s not a very good idea to be constantly changing your identity. I’m not a fraid of it, but other people would be.

I personally don’t like it. It’s too colorful and you can’t really make out the ‘g’
The colors are also very similar to what Microsoft uses. When I have a lot of tabs open, I rely on the favicons to help me quickly get from one to the other, and I tend to have a lot of tabs going, including a few google ones.
I’m a stat junkie, I like checking my adsense reports a couple times throughout the day.
