UPC (Formerly NTL) have finally launched their new encryption to prevent illegal access to their service. Forums are buzzing with discussions on the latest move by UPC to once and for all eradicate the pirates who use their service for free with the so called “Dodgy Boxes”.
Whether they’ve moved to Nagravision 2 or 3 is so far unclear, but most of the people on the afterdawn forum aren’t holding out much hope for a “fix” to compromise this latest encryption.
According to the forums, MUTV and the Adult Channels are the ones that have been hit first. They also suggest that over the next few days, people using Starviews, Eurovox’s or any other dodgy box will slowly see their channels disappear.
If I worked for UPC, I would so far count this as a huge success as users of the forums seem to have given up any hope of there ever being a fix. Well done you!
But I imagine a lot of people will begin to change over to Sky now as it’s a much better offering!

Its a real shame that ntl don’t put the same amount of effort into providing a good service, that way this problem would be mute.

‘Subs too dear’ ‘poor service’. Amazingly nothing was wrong when it was viewed for free. Typical.

Have had a lot of people attempting to post codes or request codes. I will be deleting any of these that come in, so please don’t waste your time.

All. If NTL do convert all channels to Nagra 3, I think they would be committing financial suicide. It apparently cost them over 300 million euros for this implementation. If they convert all channels to Nagra 3 – most opinions on the forums are to join Sky because its’ cheaper, and their customer service is outstanding. Sky’s basic digital package is much cheaper. Sky’s standard Sky+ Boxes (after the cost of 45 Euros to install) is cheaper than NTL’s (which is 5 Euro extra a month) over the period of a year. Also Sky’s “Introduce a Friend” deal gives you 75 Euros (which would cover the cost of installation and half the installation price of the Sky+ box). NTL are fools if they implement the migration fully. I’m seeing how things turn out.

Question to David Gilmore, has he ever thought to ask himself why there is such a big differance between Sky Ireland and Sky uk? More so now with near parity between the Euro and Sterling. Not ceap its a rip off

Paul B. I said migrating to Sky TV would be CHEAPER not cheap. The fact that I reside in Ireland and the UK doesn’t change that fact. Why did you even bring that up?? My statement still stands. If NTL migrate all channels to Nagra 3, the majority of Users will get Sky because it’s CHEAPER (see previous post) with better Customers service. Over 300 million dollars and then everyone jumps ship. Sounds like financial suicide to me.

i have the eurovox max 8 and i still have all channels.it did go of for 2 hrs at the time when the boxes were dieing of but mine kicked back in.i think the only encryption that would work properly is the one sky digital have and as far as i know they arnt selling it or renting it out.sky digitals encryption is unbreakable.i think new software will pop up eventually at the moment im not bothered but if my dodgy freinds does die and cant be reincarnated il give il give them a little funural .il dump chorus and it sh*T and head on back to sky digital with open arms.between chorus/NTL and sky digital theres no comparison sky wins hands down.

Here’s a thought UPC/NTL whatever. How about increase the cost of all subscriptions of your service of maybe 10 to 15 euro and unlock all chanels for people to see. This way maybe you don’t have to spend millions on rolling out security. This way a proves less profitable for hackers to hack??
Think outside the BOX(dodgy).

Am I right here in my thinking? If one copies the contents of the smart card (which includes the decryption keys for whatever subscription a user has paid for) and this is code is sent out in new updated firmware then all the old boxes will not need to break the encryption – just use the key and decrypt the signal – simple?

Their wireless internet networks Maxx is it? The encryption (WPA/PSK) is stronger than eircom’s (WEP) which is breakable in minutes but they’re breakable alright. I’m hoping all passphrases will start with the same letter or maybe first two or three the same because this will make a brute force attack a lot more viable. Mine’s like “EGMXGJSR”. Judging by this http://lastbit.com/pswcalc.asp it would take me around 24 hrs. to crack a UPC wireless network. If it’s your next door neighbour might be worth it.

@ Paul
cont. from last Aug.
was told today that a cardshare server is being setup for cable in irl so if you have a linux box ie: dreambox, for maybe 20euro a month you can get all the channels you previously recieved on your dodgy box
and for anyone that wants to know what cardsharing is use google to find out as its an illegal practice
