Very valid points Tom.
A lot of our time as web designers is spent educating people as to the actual time and value for our work. The fact that the work we do is not directly seen makes a lot of people think it's not as important or time consuming.

Creativity is not something that can really compete on price and a lot of people forget that. Time in front of the computer coding someones site is not the whole process. I might be out for a coffee and be scribbling notes for a site or coming up with ideas on how to market someones site more effectively.

Also I think that a lot of people don't take the extra time to view a designers work and meet them face to face. It makes all the difference if you see the designer enjoys what they do and are passionate about their work. By meeting them you can also see if they take a real interest in your project and it's not just about the cash. I think our human instincts tell us so much about people that after meeting a designer you should know if you want to work with them.

Some great points Tom.

I agree that many web designers start out in college doing the odd site (As I do) quite cheap and then relise that their time is worth much more.

Sometimes I think I don't charge enough and people think it's too good to be true when I beleive my sites are just as good or better than many companies who have a team behind them.
