I only heard today that the Department of Social Welfare has been renamed the Department of Social Protection. Seriously, what kind of a name is that?
Who made this wonderful executive decision?
It’s hard to take anyone, especially the people that run our country serious when even the most basic things are overlooked.
Because, if you want to access the newly named departments website, you must still visit www.welfare.ie – this could mean, it will be quite sometime before we all start addressing them by their newly found name.
Unfortunately for them, it doesn’t look like they will be changing to the most obvious choice of www.protection.ie anytime soon, as it appears someone else has got that name before them!
I’m really looking forward to seeing what new inventive domain name they will come up with next… not…

Tom,
I couldn’t agree more. To me, this smelled like a “massive re-branding tender for our pals before we’re booted out” exercise.
I wonder how much money, considering the recent FOI request numbers, is being spent on this re-branding when it could be used for the people the department is supposed to be “protecting”.
Nothing even remotely shocks me anymore in Ireland.

Yeah, only time will tell I guess…
I hate giving out about our country, but it’s hard not to.

When the department changed from being Welfare to Social & Family Affairs they retained the old domain. I see them retaining it once again. Only the header changed in each case.

Good point, Tom! So it seems the word ‘Family’ does not now appear in any Irish Government department’s name?!! What does that indicate or imply . . .
